Oracle Fusion Middleware Experiences Impressive Growth on Linux

Oracle today announced ongoing momentum with organizations deploying Oracle(R) Fusion Middleware on Linux. Oracle Fusion Middleware, the company's comprehensive, standards-based family of middleware products is the fastest growing middleware suite, and continues to experience exceptional growth with an increasing number of organizations choosing open, standards-based technologies that lay the foundation for service-oriented architectures (SOA). Growing its new license revenue by 24 percent year over year during Q3 FY06, a portion of Oracle Fusion Middleware's growth is connected to Linux. Oracle's hot-pluggable architecture, combined with Linux, the fastest growing operating system, enables customers to deliver highly available, secure, enterprise-class solutions on the lowest cost hardware and operating system infrastructure. Many customers are using Oracle Fusion ... (more)

Why All This Fuzz About SOA?

I’ve been to dozens of SOA lectures, presentations and conferences and though I considered some (the first ones) to be very interesting as I approached the subject, it soon started to get a bit boring as I easily could anticipate what the presenters were going to say: why adopt SOA, how will your company benefit from SOA, the possibilities SOA gives you, etc. etc. It’s fair to say that there is a lot of confusion and false expertise in this area and often these conferences are more a PR and sales show rather than a valid review of what SOA really is. But why all this fuzz about SOA? A SOA expert/sales man once said at a seminar: ‘Don’t ask yourself if you need SOA, you already have it!’. At first I thought it was funny as it sounded more like some kind of disease... ‘oh crap! when...!? It must have been that Thai stuff...’. But then he went on saying that SOA is a brand... (more)

Microsoft Rips Secret ‘Cloudnapping’ Manifesto

Microsoft has emitted a squeal of protest much like a stuck pig over a secret "Open Cloud Manifesto" that it says is quietly being handed around the industry seeking signoffs. It doesn't identify the author or authors of this manifesto but figures its supporters - one would guess organized by IBM given some recent whispers coming from its direction - are going to reveal themselves soon enough and is warning against them. See, apparently Microsoft wasn't asked to contribute to drafting the manifesto, which evidently lays down "principles and guidelines for interoperability in cloud computing." It says in a blog, "We were admittedly disappointed by the lack of openness in the development of the Cloud Manifesto." And apparently the manifesto is a take-it-or-leave-it proposition with no room for Microsoft to maneuver. It says "what we heard was that there was no desire to d... (more)

The Inter-Cloud of Clouds: Computing in a Multicloud World

I admit it, it's taken me a while to come around to the term inter-cloud, a concept being primarily promoted by Cisco as part of their Unified Computing platform. Lately the term seems to have been picking up some steam so I thought I'd take a moment to examine it a bit further. My interpretation of the so called "inter-cloud" is the abstract ability to exchange information between distinct computing clouds (storage, compute, messaging etc) be it public or private in a uniform/unified way. I've come to think of it like a higher level inter-connected network atop the current world wide web via linked API's and data sources. Greg Papadopoulos from Sun (pictured) calls it a Cloud of Clouds. In one of the more thought provoking posts I've read in a long time, Vint Cerf (the father of the Internet & Google's Chief Internet Evangelist) compares the emergence of cloud comput... (more)

EC to Object to Oracle + Sun: FT

Oracle Journal on Ulitzer The European Commission is about to object formally to Oracle's multibillion-dollar acquisition of Sun because Oracle is hanging tough and refusing to make any concessions concerning the open source database MySQL, a potential Oracle rival as the EC sees it, according to the Financial Times. The paper says a statement of objection (SO) could be issued in the next few days unless one side or the other blinks. After the FT's story appeared an EC spokesman repeated the agency's position: It's concerned about database market, Oracle isn't being constructive in providing evidence the deal wasn't anti-competitive, the process continues. So the EC neither confirmed nor denied the FT piece. Oracle could be waiting to see exactly how the EC's articulates its concerns either so it doesn't give away more than it has to or so it can take the EC to cour... (more)

Where Is Oracle Headed in the Cloud?

Oracle has sounded extremely optimistic about their future; one that is going to be dominated by the cloud. The company has reported cloud revenue growth of anywhere between 35% and 50% over the past few quarterly financial reports. Safra Catz, the Chief Financial Officer at Oracle is noted to have said that her company is focused at increasing market share on the cloud at this point “unlike all those cloud companies” like SalesForce that are focusing on profits. So is the company seeing a paradigm shift in their revenue pie? Not really. Despite the buzz about Oracle’s focus being on the cloud, this segment only contributes to 3% of the overall revenues at the moment. According to a report by Cowen analyst Peter Goldmacher, the organic cloud growth at Oracle in the second quarter is not expected to have been more than 6%. What this implies, is that a huge contribut... (more)

In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Mark Thiele, Chief Strategy Officer for Apcera, compared the Jevons Paradox to modern-day enterprise IT, examin...
