DOJ Sues to Stop Oracle; Oracle to Fight

The Department of Justice has filed suit to block Oracle's $9.4 billion hostile offer for PeopleSoft because it says it would result in higher prices, less innovation and fewer choices. The DOJ's not alone either. The attorneys general of Hawaii, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, North Dakota and Texas have joined the civil antitrust suit, which was lodged in federal court in San Francisco late Thursday. The DOJ's move is a major, if not fatal, setback for Oracle, which continues to maintain that the acquisition is not anticompetitive. Oracle's board met in an emergency session Thursday and sent out a message saying Oracle would challenge the decision, a position it's been expected to take even if it's not expected to succeed. Blasting the DOJ's decision, Oracle attributed it to aggressive lobbying by PeopleSoft management. "It is inconsistent with the ... (more)

Ellison Outlines Top Priorities at Oracle OpenWorld

CEO Larry Ellison delivered an ambitious 24-month roadmap of priorities for the nearly 35,000 attendees at Oracle OpenWorld San Francisco yesterday afternoon. From open standards and security to industry functionality, business intelligence and automation, Oracle has the scale to invest in meeting customers' most-demanding requirements. "Scale is very important in the software business," Ellison said. "As we get larger, we're able to invest more money." Oracle's focus starts with supporting open standards in order to provide customers with flexibility in their software investment. Oracle was founded on support for industry standards, according to Ellison, when it introduced its first relational database based on SQL rather than a proprietary language. Now, open standards are at the heart of the company's development of Oracle Fusion Middleware with "Hot-Pluggable" cap... (more)

The next era in IT

The history of IT is usually characterized in terms of technological change.  The mainframe era was succeeded by distributed systems and client/server computing.  User interaction has moved from terminals to thick clients to thin browser-based interfaces, which, with the emergence of Web 2.0 technologies, combine the benefits of ubiquity and a rich end-user experience.  Networking has seen a shift from proprietary protocols and wire-level standards to the near-universal adoption of TCP/IP and Ethernet.  On the software front, SOA represents another major technological shift beyond earlier distributed architectures, the ramifications of which will likely take years to unfold. At a broader level, however, I see IT evolving through three major eras, with the industry currently transitioning from the second era into the third. The first era, from IT’s inception and thro... Why SOA Is a Good Fit for CRM Solutions

Oracle on Ulitzer Online commerce is no longer just for consumer products, but also for direct and indirect goods and services. As a result, new demands are placed on classic customer relationship management (CRM) applications. While most have successfully automated customer-facing interactions (such as order capture, configuration, pricing, and order query), they still rely on external systems to process subsequent steps (such as invoicing, fulfillment, and pick-pack-ship), which are completed in a back-office enterprise resource planning (ERP) application. This leads to disjointed business processes and multiple user interfaces, each executing well within the native application (CRM or ERP), and requiring the creation of point-to-point and proprietary integrations and cumbersome custom user interfaces that are difficult to extend and maintain. Why Microsoft Should Finally Buy Citrix

DISCLAIMER: This is long and the opinions are mine. I’ve written a good bit here about the various ways Microsoft and Citrix overlap in the hypervisor space, ranging from topics like shared code base through competition for the desktop space. To me, these two players have always been the underdogs battling for the right to go head-to-head against VMware in the main enterprise (and now cloud) virtual data center event. I’ve long said here that I think Microsoft is in the best position to make that move, but to be honest, Citrix currently has better technology. In other words, Microsoft has a better strategic play, Citrix a better tactical play. The announcements that came of out Synergy last week prove that. Citrix knows what it’s doing and they know how to build virtualization products to compete with VMware. As has been asked many times before, here and elsewhere:... (more)

Gang of Four Creates Cloud BI Stack

RightScale, Jaspersoft, Talend and Vertica have joined together to deliver a complete business intelligence solution in the cloud. Jaspersoft's kicking in the compute-intensive BI software, Talend the open source data integration software, and Vertica the analytic database management system running on Amazon and orchestrated by RightScale's cloud management platform. They call it a reference architecture but RightScale CEO Michael Crandell says it's a finished product. It's a new model for RightScale, which has only trafficked in components till now. A base turnkey configuration will involve three servers, one for each application and tuned for best practices. Rapid deployment should save users the set-up and integration hassle. BI remains a top IT priority despite the shrinking IT budget. The joint pay-as-you-go solution is supposed to put affordable and actionable... (more)

EC Costing Sun $100M a Month: Ellison

The European Commission’s prolonged investigation of Oracle’s proposed acquisition of Sun, which isn’t expected to finish much before the agency’s mid-January deadline, is costing Sun $100 million a month in revenues, according to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison. Ellison, who was interviewed on-stage after a Churchill Club dinner Monday evening by former Sun president and COO Ed Zander of all people, told the crowd, “The longer this takes, the more money Sun is going to lose, and that’s not good for anybody. We want to get this done to save as many jobs as possible.” Sun’s fretful accounts either just aren’t buying because of the uncertainty of Sun’s fate or are being run off by IBM and HP. And to meet Oracle’s goal of wring $1.5 billion in operating income out of Sun the first year after the merger closes, ace Wall Street analyst Toni Sacconaghi now estimates that Oracl... (more)

Oracle and HP Can't Cooperate in the IT Marketplace: Ellison

"By filing this vindictive lawsuit against Oracle and Mark Hurd, the HP board is acting with utter disregard for [the Oracle-HP] partnership," thundered Larry Ellison Tuesday in a statement. “Oracle has long viewed HP as an important partner,” the Oracle CEO noted, adding “The HP Board is making it virtually impossible for Oracle and HP to continue to cooperate and work together in the IT marketplace." On September 2, Oracle offered the job of Co-President to Hurd, in a letter subsequently filed with the Securities & Exchange Commission. The challenges of aggregating data from consumer-oriented devices, such as wearable technologies and smart thermostats, are fairly well-understood. However, there are a new set of challenges for IoT devices that generate megabytes or gigabytes of data per second. Certainly, the infrastructure will have to change, as those volumes of data will likely overwhelm the available bandwidth for aggregating the data into a central repository. Ochandarena discusses a whole new way to think about your next...
