Steve Shine Puts the Spotlight on Open Source for Leading Publication

Ingres Corporation, the leading open source database management company and pioneer of the New Economics of IT, today announced that Steve Shine, executive vice president of worldwide operations, Ingres, will discuss the future of open source in a regular blog for CIO UK online (www.cio.co.uk). CIO Magazine is the world’s information resource for today’s chief information officer and is published in the US, UK, and around the world.

Shine is considered a thought leader in the open source arena. In his blog he will share his views on the ever changing state of the open source community and market, and what it means for businesses and C-level executives. His first blog post took a different angle on the European Union’s objections to the proposed acquisition of Sun by Oracle, with the position that time and resources spent on the opposition might be better used on other matters. Shine’s next entry unveils the misconceptions of open source that still exist among C-level executives.

“A few weeks back I met with a senior architect of a large bank to discuss how open source might fit into the bank's strategy, particularly in the area of database where they recently had some pretty unpleasant price increases levied by two of their incumbent suppliers during renegotiation of their corporate site licenses,” writes Shine in his latest blog. “Imagine my interest at hearing his woes. Not only was he able to recount the huge one time license hits shoehorned into his ever decreasing IT budget, but these vendors were also charging between three to five times the annual support costs that I could offer as an open source alternative.”

Shine’s blogs will appear every two weeks at www.cio.co.uk.

“We’re delighted to have Steve Shine blogging for CIO. Steve is a bright, straight-talking senior member of the open-source community and CIOs need to hear first hand views from within the industry,” said Martin Veitch, Editor in Chief, CIO (UK).

CIO online and its monthly magazine address issues vital to the success of chief information officers, providing business and technology leaders with peer-led insight into today’s technology environment and how it can assist in achieving business goals.

“CIO is the perfect outlet to get in front of the high level executives and shed light on some the more controversial IT debates,” said Shine. “The software landscape has dramatically changed over the last year, and as IT strategies and budgets evolve in 2010, open source software will continue to be at the forefront of companies minds.”

When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...
Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. The constant pressure to provide complete, omnichannel delivery of customer-facing solutions to meet both regulatory and customer demands is putting enormous pressure on...
Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by ...
