Oracle Unveils Firewall for Databases

Staves off threat from SQL injections

Without a doubt a database developer would cite the content in databases as the most valuable asset in IT files. Hence, they are also the most sought after targets by hackers.

Securing databases has become a concern for most firms. In this effort, Oracle has unveiled a database firewall from Oracle in order to protect databases from database attacks, particularly SQL injection, reports databasejournal.com.

Oracle VP of Database Security told reporters at InternetNews.com that most people use network firewalls to evaluate traffic going into data centers. What Oracle has done is to analyze the SQL in order to check if an SQL injection has occurred. Then, it can be blocked from entering the database.

This new database firewall technology was developed by Oracle after it took over database firewall provider Secerno in May 2010. However, Samar said that Oracle had taken the technology and improved on it. First of all, the new Oracle Database Firewall is created on a tougher version of Oracle Enterprise Linux. Additionally, the data store behind the product has been transferred to Oracle Database from PostgreSQL. Moreover, the firewall itself now supports DB2 from IBM, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase ASE and Oracle’s own database.

At any rate, the first Database Firewall release does not include support for Oracle’s open source MySQL database. The technology is expected to databases in the future. The firewall actually works by monitoring the good SQL as it analyzes the traffic associated with a server and a database.
