Oracle announced the general availability of Oracle Fusion Applications at Oracle Open World 2011. Oracle Fusion Applications is the next generation Oracle ERP that will gradually replace the existing Oracle E Business Suite, Peoplesoft, JD Edwards, Siebel and other products that Oracle either acquired or developed inhouse. According to Larry Ellison it took Oracle six years to develop and finalize this product. If you look at the Oracle E-Delivery Oracle Fusion Applications download page one of the reasons why it took so long becomes obvious - product comes on 24 DVDs - total size of downloaded software is over 50GB.
Installation of such a humongous product requires special preparations and is a daunting task even for very experienced administrators.
Oracle recognized the complexity of this product and responded by creating the provisioning framework and the suite of provisioning tools to help with the deployment process.
Amazon Web Services provides an excellent platform to create test and development instances of Oracle Fusion Applications. We picked Oracle VM AMI ( ami-28f9ca5c ) as base operating system and virtual machine installation platform because it is provided by the Oracle Corporation and already contains many OS components necessary for this installation. Another reason why we picked this AMI is because ultimately all Oracle products become certified and supported on Amazon Web Services, provided they run on Oracle VM.
This AMI has one problem, though, that needs to be fixed immediately, otherwise server hangs on restart. You need to remove HWADDR line from /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file.
Because of the product size software download should be launched from the target server that will contain downloaded media . Best way to do it is if you start Firefox session on target server and perform the direct download there since you have to provide username, password and answer to standard questions about export limitations etc ( much simpler then using wget method ).
The first product to be installed is Provisioning Framework which containins Provisioning Wizard and other utilities.
The next step is to run the Provisioning Wizard. It can perform several actions for you, as per screenshot below - create transaction database, provision application environment or maintain existing environments.
The transaction database is a necessary prerequisite for Oracle Fusion Applications so we'll install it first. Once you provide answers to all questions about Oracle Base, Oracle Home, datafile locations then new transaction database will be created and started. Transaction database is created from provided templates, it is 55GB in size, properly configured and contains database structures needed for next installation steps.
