Iron Age Shoes Transforms Business With Oracle's Java-Based Software Suite

Oracle's Java-Based Software Suite Selected Over SAP And Microsoft

Oracle announced that Iron Age Shoes has implemented the Oracle E-Business Suite, including Oracle Financials, Oracle Advanced Procurement and Oracle Inventory, Oracle Warehouse Management and Oracle Order Management. The project is part of an overall turnaround strategy in which the industrial footwear retailer is transforming operations to reduce costs, improve performance and increase its share of the growing global market for safety and work shoes.

The new systems help provide Iron Age with accurate and timely insight to financials, operations and sales, and enable the retailer to advise its commercial customers on buying patterns, safety compliance and costs across facilities. The retailer is using the new Oracle applications to make choices regarding financial management, inventory allocation, merchandising operations and customer relationships.

Oracle's Java- and standards-based software suite was selected as the best solution over competing SAP and Microsoft offerings because Iron Age determined that Oracle provided better functionality and a solution that is easier to manage and operate. Installed in less than nine months, the Oracle E-Business Suite enabled Iron Age to centralize information systems at its Massachusetts headquarters. From these centralized systems, the retailer supports a call center in Pennsylvania, a second headquarters in Canada and more than 100 store locations, without placing servers and support in those locations.

"We ruled out SAP because of the cost and lack of focus of their applications, for what we were trying to accomplish," said Drew Farris, CIO, Iron Age Shoes. Farris said that the retailer evaluated incumbent vendor Great Plains, now Microsoft, closely but ultimately rejected the solution because "it would require that we put servers in every location, with IT support for that. Oracle has been making great strides to get thinner and thinner, with more HTML applications that work for our business."

Since completing the implementation in October 2005, Iron Age Shoes' management team has better information to make choices regarding operations throughout the retail enterprise. "It's all about choices," said Gladys Lau, Retail Industry Director, Oracle. "Iron Age Shoes requires the level of customer insight today that it enjoyed when it first began. With that kind of insight, they are poised to grow and do so profitably. We are thrilled to be part of their success."

IoT & Smart Cities Stories
When talking IoT we often focus on the devices, the sensors, the hardware itself. The new smart appliances, the new smart or self-driving cars (which are amalgamations of many ‘things'). When we are looking at the world of IoT, we should take a step back, look at the big picture. What value are these devices providing. IoT is not about the devices, its about the data consumed and generated. The devices are tools, mechanisms, conduits. This paper discusses the considerations when dealing with the...

Digital Transformation is much more than a buzzword. The radical shift to digital mechanisms for almost every process is evident across all industries and verticals. Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by ...
