Rep. Marsha Blackburn has announced she will introduce a bill on mobile health application regulations within the next two weeks. Speaking at a Telecommunications Industry Association event, Blackburn said the bill would "provide the [FDA] with the tools it needs to effectively protect consumers from the high-risk technologies" without enforcing unnecessary oversight on lower-risk technologies.  Read Original Content

In a recent online issue of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine, researchers looked at 30 weight loss apps for iPhone and Android platforms to see if they included any of the 20 behavioral strategies that previous studies showed were effective for weight loss and reducing risk for cardiovascular disease and Type 2 diabetes.  On average, the apps included about 19 percent of the 20 strategies the researchers found.  Read Original Content

Consumer use of health apps on their desktops or mobile devices is not very popular, according to a September 2013 survey from AYTM Market Research. Only seven percent of respondents indicated that they often use health-related apps, 13 percent said they rarely use health apps, 20 percent said they sometimes use the apps, while 60 percent never use health related apps.  Read Original Content

Babycenter, Health.com, Mensfitness.com and Ehealthforum were among 12 websites and apps contacted as part of a senate investigation into how consumers’ personal information is collected and shared with third parties.  The U.S. Senate Commerce committee is concerned that websites and apps in the health market, among others, may be sharing personal data with so-called data brokers.  Read Original Content
