A week ago, I attempted some predictions on what Oracle would announce at OOW. I would like to review how I did. But first a few general comments. First off, what a boring conference! Not a log of news, except for Linux, and everyone including me knew it was coming. Also, from what I have heard, there was not alog of excitement in the air for the show. Too bad for Larry. Now onto a scorecard of how I did with my predictions.

Linux Announcement: Nailed that one.

Fusion Announcement: Confusing, but nevertheless, nailed this one as well.

Some kind of ESB or Portal Announcement: Ditto

Open Source: Swing and a miss. Not much here surprisingly, and Linux doesn't count. I meant producing OS not using it.

SOA Strategy: Kinda. It was the weakest major SOA annoucement I have seen by a major vendor. The press release has so many acronyms, it looks like a monkey fell on the keyboard.

JEE 5 Support: Another wiff. I would have expected them to pre-announce their work here, but to no avail. Good to hear, or not to hear, though.

Telco: Bingo. This was essentially what the Metasolv announcement was about

Bash SAP: A little bit muted, but still cleared the bar.

Market position puffery: Do I even need to make a comment?

An acquisition: Another bell-ringer. I would not have picked MetaSolv, but Oracle is the Lay's potato chips of technology companies (Can't eat just one....)

So 8 for 10, which is pretty good for telling the future.

• Bill, on the face of it you did well, but allow me append a few messages into your lot(g) file. I'm no Oracle watcher but anything with ESB or SOA in it could have been predicted by anyone, unless they came out and said these things are now old (red)hat and the next big thing is BOLLX. Bashing SAP was also always on the cards and I don't blame you for missing JEE.

• You guys just KILL me....your Oracle paranoia is truly all encompassing and a bit sad. Dain, you, and the ever present Mr.Stahl (on The ServerSide).

  I was at OpenWorld and BEA World. 50,000 attendees at Open World and what 1500 - 2000 at BEA's (more than half of which were employees and partners)! You weren't even AT the show, nor was BEA. SAP was, IBM was, and hundreds of other partners and tens of thousands of customers who in my opinion would have begged to differ.

  You should go next year.....maybe you will truly learn something. Thousands of your customers and partners did!
