Oracle9i Application Server to Deliver First Unified Platform for Wireless Applications

Oracle9i Application Server to Deliver First Unified Platform for Wireless Applications

(February 10, 2003) - New wireless features in Oracle9i Application Server will make it the first and only integrated application server to support XHTML 2.0, the new W3C standard. The wireless features, scheduled to be available in a new Wireless Toolkit on the Oracle Technology Network, are designed to make it easier and more cost effective for developers to build and deploy mobile technologies across the enterprise. In addition to supporting XHTML 2.0, Oracle9i Application Server will also provide a single, unified platform for J2ME and Multi-Media Messaging (MMS) development models.

XHTML 2.0, an evolution of HTML and the new W3C standard for building multi-channel applications, offers a single markup language for creating Web applications that can be deployed to any device. The new standard provides better content presentation capabilities for smaller wireless device screens, improves developer productivity and reduces costs. As the first integrated platform to support XHTML, Oracle9i Application Server 9.0.4 will provide device independence and presentation flexibility for richer wireless services.

Oracle9i Application Server 9.0.4 will offer a complete Web services infrastructure for J2ME. Content stored on devices can now be delivered and managed using new features of Oracle9i Application Server - including a provisioning system for Over-the-Air (OTA) delivery of J2ME applications and Digital Rights Management (DRM) support for controlling usage of downloaded J2ME applications.

Oracle9i Application Server 9.0.4 simplifies development by providing enhanced messaging services for creating actionable alerts, message adaptation, and failover delivery control. New MMS functionality will allow for the creation and management of applications that include graphics, video, and animation as well as automatic adaptation of media content based on a device's capabilities. These services allow developers to create messaging applications that provide accurate time- or location-sensitive information to their users as voice, text, or media-rich messages.

The enhanced Wireless Toolkit, scheduled to be available via the new Mobile Development Center on the Oracle Technology Network (OTN), will provide wireless code samples, documentation, and Software Development Kits (SDKs) to help developers build and deploy multi-channel XHTML, J2ME, and messaging applications. The new XHTML SDK will offer a standards-based model for creating multi-channel applications, while the new J2ME Web services SDK will simplify the development and deployment process of Web services to J2ME devices. The Mobile Development Center also provides a hosted instance of Oracle9i Application Server, allowing developers to build and test their wireless applications online.

The Wireless Toolkit is scheduled to be available for download free of charge from OTN in Spring 2003, and the new wireless features are scheduled to ship with Oracle9i Application Server Release 2, version 9.0.4 within the same timeframe.
