Sun Microsystems, Inc. Among the innovations that will be introduced at the 2009 JavaOne conference are the new Java(SM) Store, that will enable companies and developers to distribute content to the estimated 800 million Java desktop users worldwide, as well as key updates to its JavaFX(TM) and GlassFish(TM) Portfolio software. In addition, Sun will also preview the upcoming versions of Java Platform Standard Edition 7 (Java SE 7) and Java Platform Enterprise Edition 6 (Java EE 6).

“Java is one of the most ubiquitous and widespread technology platforms the world has ever seen – and its future has never been brighter,” said Schwartz. “The innovations that will be unveiled today, in particular the Java Store, will represent the beginning of a new era for the Java community – one defined by technical brilliance, market innovation and new business opportunities.”

Global Impact of Java

Today, Java is among the world's best known brands, most popular communities and most widely deployed technology platforms. The reach of the Java platform is stunning and includes:

  • More than 6.5 million Java developers worldwide;
  • More than 7 billion Java devices, including more than 2.6 million mobile devices, 40 million TV set-top boxes and 800 million Java desktops.

Sun Unveils the Java Store

Sun chose the 2009 JavaOne conference to debut the Java Store, a consumer-facing storefront enabling the discovery and purchase of Java and JavaFX applications. The Java Store is a network service allowing developers and companies to reach an estimated 1 billion Java users around the world. It offers a nearly unequaled distribution channel for reaching potential customers and driving revenue through the sale of innovative new content. More information on the Java Store can be found at http://store.java.com.

New Features and Updates Added to JavaFX and GlassFish Portfolio Software

Sun will also announce numerous updates and enhancements to its suite of Java developer tools and technologies, including:

  • JavaFX 1.2, which includes new cross platform User Interface (UI) controls, faster application start-up, streaming media support and other performance enhancements across desktop, browser and mobile. In addition, JavaFX TV and the Java FX Authoring Tool will be previewed, extending the JavaFX vision to bring rich and expressive interactive content to the TV and set-top box environments and allow designers and web developers to visually create JavaFX applications.
